Symbol
Written by Brandon, Callahan, Max, Song Mei
Definition – something that represents something else such as the eagle represents the United States.
From the text:
The title of the book To Kill a Mockingbird has very little meaning to the actual plot of the story.
But a mockingbird is a representation of innocence. So the title To Kill a Mockingbird is to kill innocence. This represents symbol because a mockingbird is a representation of innocence and in Maycomb innocence was lost due to racism.
Miss Maudie says to Scout "Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up peoples gardens, they don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird" (90). This could represent innocence because the mockingbird just sings. Everyone is equal and no race is more superior than any other.
