Movies

We use movies to escape just like they did in the 1930s. People go to movies to “get off the planet”. Like Star Wars, people go there to make it seem like you are not a human, you are more like an alien, or a jedi. When people are sad, mad, happy, and any other emotion they sometimes go to the movies to escape. Modern movies are not like movies in the 1930s. They are different because movies then were in black and white, and were used to escape the Great Depression and World War I.
Movies in the 1930s were the Hollywood decade. This was when movies started becoming a bigger deal, and more people became famous. As many actors and actresses started off their career in the 1930s, they tried to make the movies better. Late 1930s is when movies started having synchronized dialogue which means when people talk you can hear them. Before then you could here them but it was at the wrong scene. Movies after the 1930s became more advanced and took a giant leap forward. They had better graphics, they were colored, and they were longer (Scene 1).
Movies were in black and white up until 1931. The very first colored movie was The Song of a Flame. Many colored movies followed after that. Movies were about the Great Depression and World War I. Movies allowed actors, and everyone else to escape the hardship of the Great Depression (Having Fun). Movies allowed people to escape because they were cheap and you could stay in the movie theater all day. During this decade adventure movies were a big hit. Also horror movies were also a big hit. Many stars made their careers in this decade. Overall the 1930s was a big time for Hollywood (Movies of the Thirties).
Movies are important in To Kill a Mockingbird because it allowed the kids to act things out to escape some of their problems. For example the kids act out the movie the Gray Ghost (Lee 14). Later in the story Jem, Scout, and Dill were rolling each other in a tire when Scout lands in front of Boo Radley’s house Jem decides to make a game from it. As the summer passes the game gets more and more complicated. When they get to the acting part they give everyone roles to play. Jem was Boo, Scout was Mrs. Radley, and Dill was Mr. Radley (39).
Movies overall had a big impact on people in the 1930s. That is how movies let people escape from their problems. Especially during the 1930s, and the Great Depression just like the book To Kill a Mockingbird.
